For those of you who may not be familiar with our work, James Meyer began it all in 1970 with a background in drawing and sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design and the Athens Polytechenion. He moved to the store's present location in 1976.
Over the years he developed remarkable skills in design, lost wax casting, forging, fabrication and engraving. The James Meyer Company flourished and saw numerous talented staff personalities contribute to its success. The Company featured not only an extraordinary body of work in gold and precious gemstones (pieces now number in the 1200's), but also represented American Crafts beautifully designed by scores of craftspeople from around the country (which include hand blown glass, pottery, various metalworks, leather, wood, and sterling silver). Nothing was quite like it anywhere else. As one of our many longtime customers affectionately put it, "Jim Meyer came to Williamsport and made gold important."
As with all good things, there is a beginning and an end. After 30 years, the James Meyer Company closed its doors, only for a wonderful new beginning. Jim is now happily designing one-of-a-kind pieces at his home studio in Bastress Township, Pennsylvania. His work can be seen on display at our shop in downtown Williamsport or he can be contacted directly at his home studio. He also displays his work at his son's studio in Chestnut Hill and downtown Philadelphia, at the Caleb Meyer Studio.
As for myself, I apprenticed with the James Meyer Company beginning in 1994, after completing an Art degree at Lycoming College, a brief teaching career and some years in the sign painting business. Upon Jim closing his store in 1999, I decided to continue on. My interest is to carry this very special work into the future, where all can enjoy and even marvel at the aesthetic and often symbolic content of the collection. My staff and I strive to protect and preserve it. We continue to develop what we hope to be complimentary pieces.
My work includes limited edition production work, as well as custom and one-of-a-kind pieces. My design sense has been greatly influenced by natural and architectural forms, jewelry’s evolution throughout history, and my apprenticeship with James Meyer. My intention is to craft quality pieces that can be worn and appreciated everyday; pieces constructed of beautiful and unique materials that evoke a sense of permanency. I hope that the work will be enjoyed for many years and will eventually become tomorrow’s family heirlooms. My work can now be found at a new second location, Artists on the Green, which is in Eagle’s Mere, PA.
Jim also enjoys contributing some of the new designs to our most recent collection each year. We hope you will be delighted with our work, in fact we guarantee it. We welcome your interest and hope to see you in the studio sometime. We are now entering into our 10th year in the studio, and we look forward to serving you and to carry on a rich tradition of finely hand-crafted gold jewelry and American Crafts based on quality, dedication, and customer satisfaction. Thank you for supporting the arts.
Sincerely,
Ann McKay
